Soft Tissue Injury Recovery

Soft Tissue Injury Recovery

Life can leave us with aches and pains that slow down our progress, such as tight trapezius muscles between your shoulders and neck, or injuries that just aren't healing as they should. We want you out there living your life to the max, so at Pulsar Health we offer therapies to help get you back to your peak health using the remarkable power of shockwave therapy, steroid shot and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) shots. We also use LED lights. Peptide therapy is not currently available due to FDA concerns over its use.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy can be useful when you are not healing from an injury as expected or have a long-term problem of the soft tissues such as stiffness of the muscles around your neck. It is FDA approved in the treatment of lateral tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis. Interestingly, it can also be used for skin tightening and cellulite therapy!

The device looks like a fancy massage gun but works with acoustic technology. Initially developed in Germany in the 1960s for treatment of kidney stones, many beneficial effects were found as it increased tissue regeneration in the area including blood vessel growth and production of new connective tissue.

The treatment not only helps in long-term improvement of the area's healing, but it also gives immediate relief of pain by working on the nerves in the area. If your pulled hamstring or golfer's elbow isn't getting better in a timely fashion, or some other long-term injury is interfering with work or play, come in to be checked out and do a trial session of shockwave therapy, which should not only provide relief but jumpstart healing. Further sessions will depend on the extent of injury versus rate of healing, and are guided by our medical team. It usually takes a few weeks of on average two sessions / week to get the full effects.

Shockwave therapy on one area takes about 15 minutes from start to finish. The frequency (Hz), energy level, and the size of the administering head can be adjusted depending on the tissue and type of injury / inflammation to get us results faster. The machine is quite loud so don't be startled by the noise! It is a quick, easy way to get pain-relief and promote healing, but should not be used immediately after injury (best to allow time for the body to attempt normal healing), in the presence of active infection, if you have a blood disorder or are taking blood thinners, near the site of a cancer, or in pregnant women. We also avoid direct application on bone and joints, as it is more targeted to ligaments, tendons, muscles and other soft tissue.

It can be used as a solo therapy or with physical therapy, steroid shots or PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections. Medications can also be used with it such as anti-inflammatory pain relievers like ibuprofen or topical CBD oils / creams. Shockwave therapy can help difficult cases heal and maybe even avoid surgery.

There are no significant negative effects when performed within guidelines, so text or call for an appointment to come in and try it out to for yourself!

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or Steroid Shots

Healing that is not progressing normally - most injuries should be better in four to six weeks - may need further intervention. Sometimes conditions can arise and not improve with time, such as nerve issues around the foot. One of the tools we use are injections of steroid or platelet rich plasma (PRP). Conditions that we might use steroid / PRP shots for are:

  • muscle or tendon strains that are not healing well such as Achilles tendon injuries
  • ganglion cysts that are causing pain
  • tight muscles in the neck / shoulder area that are causing discomfort
  • muscular injuries that are not improving such as torn Hamstrings
  • joint pain (but not when there is fluid / acute inflammation in the joint)
  • trigger finger
  • rotator cuff injuries (not complete tears)
  • plantar fasciitis
  • nerve issues such as foot neuropathy

Steroid injections calm inflammation but if done repeatedly can "thin out" tissues, whereas PRP injections can help tissue regeneration and healing, strengthening tissues long term. PRP does cause some increased discomfort at the injection site for up to 3 days and it can take 3 to 4 weeks for the full effects to be felt. At Pulsar Health, we photoactivate PRP to make it even more potent. Typically, two to three PRP injection sessions are used, spaced about a month apart, to support healing as much as possible. The injection itself can be uncomfortable in some soft tissues, but we have laughing gas (pronox) available as well as oral over-the-counter medications for pain to help.

Energy Healing

Available on a limited basis, Pulsar Health does offer energy healing.

For those unfamiliar with energy healing, the body's own natural processes are gently "boosted" with energy managed by the "healer" who has been certified in these techniques.

In a Reiki treatment, typically the practitioner's hands touch your skin (or outside your clothes - no need to disrobe!), and they begin to feel warm as the energy flow starts. The treatment is very relaxing and works at a deep level to correct root causes as well as acute problems. It can be supplemented with specific sounds and symbols, if appropriate, in Karuna Reiki.

Pranic healing is more complex than Reiki, although still relaxing. It works on removing harmful energies before putting in restorative energy. It can be very powerful and lead to the release of embedded emotional pain as well as relieving physical pain. The effects start shortly after the initiation of therapy and continue to reduce pain and optimize healing for days.

Energy healing is considered a complimentary therapy, not to replace, but to augment, more Western forms of medicine. At this time, Pulsar Health does not provide acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine, but can refer to allied professionals.

Combination therapy

At Pulsar Health, we can use infrared LED light therapy, shockwave therapy and PRP shots along with topical products (CBD oils) and oral medications in various combinations to maximize pain relief and healing. We currently are not doing manipulations or massage but can recommend allied professionals.
