Luscious Lips

We see gorgeous lips created by lip filler on actresses and influencers almost every time we look. Lip filler can be an art form creating a novel lip shape, or simply a way to augment your appearance.  Luscious lips are not just for the Ladies among us - Gentlemen, if you want to draw eyes to your lips, consider a touch of filler! Here are a few questions to think about before getting lip filler:

  1. What type of filler are you going to get?

The type of filler affects the appearance. If you want to build up the lip height, a stiffer filler is better. There is a little more risk of lumpiness with a stiffer filler, so placing very small amounts in each area and massaging firmly afterwards may be necessary when filling out a small lip. Also, the quality of the filler makes a difference, with more expensive fillers tending to have smoother and softer results. At Pulsar Health, we typically use Restylane Kysse for volume on younger lips, Restylane Defyne for building up lips that need more architectural support, and Restylane Silk for adding a soft shine without significantly changing the lip shape. The fillers are purchased directly from the Galderma company without any third parties involved for guarantee of purity of product.

  1. What shape do you want the Cupid's bow to be?

Do you want a Russian heart shape, a flatter "Kylie Jenner" look, or more peaked appearance? Placement of the lip filler using a needle and small boluses can gently coax lips into these shapes.

  1. Is a pouty look what you want or a fuller wider mouth shape?

Consider your overall face shape and the shapes of the faces as well as lips of those you like on social media, to be clear about what look will make you feel fabulous. Bring pictures to your appointment!

  1. How long is your white lip and do you have a gummy smile?

Sometimes a touch of neuromodulator like botox or dysport can help show more of your lip, in a "lip flip", although it can also make it harder to use a straw until it wears off. Be very careful with use of neuromodulators especially under the lips as it can interfere with your smile.

  1. How strong is your lip line?

Older clients often lose lip definition with thinning of the white roll around the edges of the red lip and may need specific augmentation there that can be done with fillers or smooth threads.

  1. Will a lip lift be more helpful than fillers?

Surgery for lips can help make the "white lip" area between the nose and red lips smaller - called a "lip lift", it's a simple procedure that can have dramatic results. This area can get "long" over time and is associated with aging, so making it shorter can not only make your upper lip look fuller, but help create a more youthful overall appearance. It does require a scar where the nose meets the lip, but this usually heals well. The procedure is done with numbing medicine, and stitches stay in place for about a week. Just so you are aware, we also do reconstructive procedures for the lips, including cleft lip surgery or repairs following accidents, dog bites or other injuries.

  1. How do you care for your lips before and afterwards?

Caring for the lips is recommended using good hydration - try the Image MD lip enhancer sun block that also adds a lovely shine - or for the ultimate lip pampering, check out the Hydrafacial lip perk treatment in our Spa. This exfoliates the lips thoroughly and pushes in hydration factors, giving you softness and shine instantly. You take the rest of the Lip Perk home and keep reapplying to prolong the effects. At Pulsar Health, you can top off your luscious lips with clean make up from Jane Iredale, which continues to hydrate as well as beautifully color your lips. The aubergine lip pencil pairs particularly well with some of our new sophisticated shades in the Color Luxe lipsticks. For all day color, use the Matte lip stains topped with a stroke or two of the gloss that is hydrating rather than super sticky. Have you explored the pH color changing "Forever" colors for lips and cheeks? What you put on is not what you have in 15 minutes as the color shifts due to your natural lips' pH. Enjoy!
