Expressive Brows

Framing the "windows to the soul", brow expressions are a lovely subtle message to others - a sarcastically raised single brow is a delightful comment!

Fashions change but having groomed brows is an unmistakable hallmark of a sophisticated look. At Pulsar Health, we improve on what you have going on. Brow lamination creates a microbladed look with your brow hairs, like a keratin treatment for your brows that lasts a few weeks. A quick brow and eyelash tint and brow shaping can change your appearance dramatically. It can also be supplemented by showing you how to maximize your brow using Jane Iredale clean mineral makeup products. For a more permanent cure to a unibrow, consider laser hair reduction. To grow your lashes or brow hair, we have wonderful stem cell products that help without any irritation of the eye itself or affecting the iris color.

One of the "Gateway" Med Spa services is using Tox - Botox, Dysport, and others - to ease forehead and frown lines as well as crow's feet. Prevention is definitely a good thing before the furrows get super deep and people think you are angry when it's just your resting face.... Check out the website section on Facial Balancing: Tox, Fillers & Threads to learn more about using these and what to be wary of.

For very deep lines, other interventions may be needed to smooth them away. Smooth Threads can be placed in furrows, which can be repeated every few weeks until they fill in. This is especially useful for lines just above the eyebrows where it is not safe to place Tox, to avoid the risk of ptosis. Alternatively, a carbon dioxide laser treatment can smooth down lines, or microneedling can help soften them. We offer all these treatments and make recommendations customized to what you are looking for.

Whether or not you would benefit aesthetically from a brow lift depends on what is happening with your facial height, brow position and upper eyelids. If you have a satisfactory forehead height and brow position, but just excess skin of the upper eyelids, do not "mess up what's working" and use moving the brows to fix the upper eyelids. Just do a quick upper eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and you are good to go! See the website section on "Looking at Eyes" for more information.

A temporary brow lift can be done using a Thread lift, as well as minor static facial balancing corrections of the height of one eyebrow versus the other. A brow Thread lift can be used to create a "cat eye" or "fox eye" look as a fashion statement for a while. In a Thread lift, there are no incisions, just a small needle hole to insert the Threads. There is some discomfort when numbing medicine is used, but the rest of the procedure is very well tolerated and done awake in about an hour. Results vary in how long they last. In young people with strong ligaments and muscles, there can be early recurrence in a few weeks, but in most people the results last a few months to a year. The Threads also leave behind some collagen for a long-term effect, and "fixing" Threads can increase the length of time the results hold. Threads tend not to increase forehead height as there is more compression of the skin compared to an endoscopic surgical brow lift (more on that below). However, swelling after a Thread lift is, like other forehead procedures, quite prominent and the area feels tight for a while.

Surgical Brow lifts can be done through small incisions (endoscopic brow lift) or via direct skin excision. Brow lifts literally "lift the eyebrows". A "temporal" brow lift focuses on lifting the outer parts of the eyebrows, rather than the whole of the eyebrow.

The endoscopic brow lift (through small incisions in the hairline) releases some tight bands (ligaments) as well as anchoring the deep undersurface of the forehead in a higher position. A lot of lift can be achieved in a long-term result with minimal incisions. The disadvantage of this, however, is that it does increase the relative height of the forehead which can be "aging", as forehead height tends to increase with time and a receding hairline. Also, the area feels very "tight" for a few weeks during recovery, so you may need medication to deal with the headache type effect.

A direct brow lift (either whole brow or temporal) excises skin at the hairline or, less commonly, within the hair itself, and sometimes (typically in older men) at the eyebrow. This avoids increasing the height of the forehead, but is also associated with a tight feeling initially, as well as significant swelling for a few days, so we recommend sleeping propped up for a few nights after facial surgery. There is also a much longer scar but we disguise the scar at or in the hairline, and actively manage it as it heals.

Incidentally, arnica or bromelain derived from pineapple extract can be useful to reduce swelling, as can antihistamines and anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. An antibiotic at the time of the procedure may be recommended if Threads or an implanted anchor are placed such as in an endoscopic brow lift.
